Maverick Girls help Power Team O to Gold.

2010-07-26

Putting a cap on your club volleyball career at the end of July is a nice way to finish. It means you have likely been selected to represent your Province at the National Team Challenge Cup. Being there and playing amongst the best players at your age in Canada is a prize most young players shoot for.

For all the Maverick players involved with Team O this summer. One thing is for sure they will remember the summer of 2010 like no other.

On the 19u Boys team were Jeremie Lortie and Phil James along with Jori Mantha. The boys loss to Alberta in the Semis and then rebounded to defeat Quebec (whom they had lost to in pool play forcing the Ontario Alberta semi match-up).

To play this event and not loose a match is of course the icing on the cake. The 2010 version of the 18u Team Ontario did just that. Powered by the performances of Kayla Bell Hammond, Olivia St Jean, Charlotte Sider and the English Twins (Kelsie and Myriam) Team O crushed TCSA (Training Centre Southern Alberta) in the final in a straight set victory. This capped a perfect tournament for the team and the youth division careers of some very special athletes.

For Kelsie to be selected as a star amongst stars, was a bittersweet finish indeed. Injured during the selection process in 2009, Kelsie was out to prove this year that she belonged in this upper echelon of athletes and could compete with the best of the best.

Now officially done their careers as Mavericks this quintet of girls will turn their focus to post secondary competition and even higher heights. For some it will mean being on the opposite side of the net from long time friends and team mates. However the friendships made during this type of experience means that when the final whistle blows there will be lot's of laughs and memories to share. Good Luck Ladies and thanks for setting the bar nice and high for those to follow.
