2010 repeat at TIER 1 15u Girls East Nationals

2010-05-10

A scenery change for the first time in 5 years may have changed a lot about the 2010 Eastern Canadian 14-16u Championships but our winning string continues under the banner of Maverick Ambush.

Coached by Judi Mousseau and Shelia Roy this fiesty group came off a 5th place finish at Provincials and proceeded to put together a string of solid performances in Sherbrooke. As each day went by, the wins started piling up along with the confidence level of both team and coaches.

Entering Sunday with a 6-0 record the girls made quick work of South County in a matching pair of 25-18 scores. With the quarter finals behind them they were prepared to take on the best Quebec had to offer in Brossard. Using the experience of their opening season trip to Sherbrooke to boost their confidence the Ambush cruised to wins of 15-16 and 25-15.

So here we are; 15u Ambush in the finals two years in a row. The name Maverick had already been penciled in beside three other gold medals this weekend but they were all consolation divisions, this one was for all the marbles. As fate usually finds us, the finals are often against another Ontario squad whom we may have seen earlier in the year. Burlington Blaze had cruised into the finals off a pair of wins including an amazing 15-1 third set win in their quarters, and a straight set win over the lone Alberta entry NAVC. Certainly they had momentum on their side but no one told them what was lying in wait from Ottawa. A sudden jolt of reality and a 25-20 win left the Ambush one set from a repeat.

The Blaze were knocked into some serious reputation rebuilding. They proved their worth and dealt the Ambush a convincing 25-15 loss. Now everything was up in the air! Imagine a National title and your entire year riding on a single game to 15 points. WOW the pressure that these young players must have been feeling. This one turned out to be worth the price of admission, the Ambush won a thrilling 15-13 final set. 2 POINTS- that is what made the difference in a lifetime of memories.

Way to go Parents, Players and Coaches now we get to continue the banner ceremony at the Banquet on June 4th. Get your tickets soon as the party will be rocking!
