Waterloo produces two more medals and a dream.

2010-05-03

How does a President dream? It starts by taking a look at the schedule for the 18u championships and noticing that the Final two Matches of the OVA calendar year will be the 18u Boys and Girls championships played side by side. Then it turns toward the possibility of a Maverick Team playing on those two "Show Courts" at the end of the day. This weekend came so close that we could see it. At Noon two HP 18u teams were about to play their semifinals when this thought became more than a dream, it looked like a dress rehearsal as the Mustangs played Mac and the Shotguns played Durham side by side with the house packed.

It didn't take long for the Mustangs to take care of business (25-15, 25-13) but the Shotguns ran out of ammunition against the defending National Champions falling 23-25,20-25. So the dream was crushed... or was it. If our name was to be noticed, this afternoon was the time and place. While the Shotguns were relegated to a back court to play for Bronze the 18u Stampede had their say in highlighting the centre stage. Scheduling being what it is the girls court ran behind and low and behold on Sunday at 3:00 the 18u courts were occupied by two Maverick teams. The Stampede would go on to crush Forest City (25-18, 25-15) for the first time this season while the Mustangs fought gallantly only to fall to Toronto's Crush (25-25,17-25).

At the 17u age group the weekend was shaping up on a nice note. Friday saw both Maverick teams sitting on top of their respective pools. and moving into power pools. The girls Blackjacks had a tough road ahead of them as winning their pool put them into the top 16 and some tough Tier 1 competition. This was a huge moral victory for this group. Saturday brought about a very competitive schedule in which the 'Jacks found the victory column again with a win over Stratford. But Saturday's cruel reality meant Tier 2 for Sunday and an eventual 5th place standing.

For the Desperados things were shaping up just fine for Sunday. While Saturday was a topsy turvy day in their pool they ended up finishing 2nd and headed into Sunday in a comfortable place. Nothing is clear but as the team went head to head with Forest City we all felt a 4th final four team was inevitable. This team who battled so tough all season long and demonstrated signs of greatness fell just short of their own dream (23-25,22-25). Relegated to a final match for 5th against the Ottawa Fusion the boys rebounded well with a solid performance illustrating for a second time who the big dog in this 'hood it. One doesn't have to geet too close to their training gym in the next two weeks to hear how hard these guys are going to work on getting some redemption in Abbottsford.
