Children's fitness tax credit cancelled for 2017

2017 / 04 / 17

The Children’s fitness tax credit was intended to help fiight childhood obesity by encouraging parents to enroll their childrent in physically active programs. The 2016 tax year is the last year parents can claim up to a maximum of $500 per child, from eligible fees paid in 2016 for the cost of registration or membership in a program of physical activity. NOTE: under the Liberal government, the children's fitness tax credit, including the supplement for children with disabilities, will be eliminated for 2017 and later tax years.

In eliminating the credit, the Liberal government has said that not enough people benefit from the program. A Liberal spokesperson told us that only a small percentage of the population have applied the credit to their tax returns.

Parents who feel otherwise may with to contact their federal MP to ask that the tax credit be reinstated.
