Following up on the heels of Lakeside’s silver at the Far Western National Qualifier, the Maverick Mustangs 18U team recently came home from this weekend’s 2017 Boys’ Atlantic Northeastern National Qualifier in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with a gold medal.  Along the way, they showed determination, overcame adversity and represented the Ontario Volleyball Association with pride.

The Mustangs began pool play seeded 15 of 56 teams.  They were able to secure 2-0 victories against NYC Impact Fire and Warren Sixpack before facing Long Island Volleyball club.  The LIVBC 18 team proved too much for the Mavericks, beating them 25-14, 25-21.  This proved to be the only loss of the weekend for the Mustangs.

After the round robin, the Mustangs would then move on to the Challenge matches where they would face #3 seed ON Lakeside in their first match.  This showdown took place much earlier in the event than both teams had hoped would happen.  Lakeside started off the match on fire, but eventually the Mustangs clawed their way back to win 28-26, 25-21 to advance against the sixth ranked Rochester Pace Bootleggers. Rochester proved to be formidable competitors who pushed a tired Mustangs team to three sets, but the Mavs would come out victorious 25-22, 21-25, and 17-15.

The Mustangs entered the tournament with a short bench, missing captain Matt Wlodarski (injured) and Julien Caswell (flu).  Mahmoud Abdelaziz fought through his own bout of the flu to play on Saturday, but was unable to suit up on Sunday.  Alex Rioux suffered an injury during the event and this left the depleted Mustangs squad with a limited roster of seven players.  They would not let that deter them from digging deep and persevering while competing in the Playoff Gold bracket.  Led by Alex St-Denis, Greg Love and Jacob Nesbitt, the Mavs would defeat CJVA Boys 18U (New Jersey) 2-0 in the quarterfinal and Club SyrV Boy’s 18U (Syracuse) in three sets in the semifinal.  The only thing left on the agenda was a showdown in the finals with the #1 ranked Yorketowne 18 Blue.  Yorketowne had previously beaten another Canadian powerhouse ON Pakmen in the quarter final, so the Mustangs knew they were in for a strong match.  Richard Bucar, Jackson Dunning, Alex Nsakanda, and “big play” Max St-Denis came through with clutch performances for the Mavericks.  The final was a close match with the Maverick Mustangs upsetting their opponents in their home venue 25-23, 25-23 to claim GOLD!

Congratulations to the Maverick Mustangs 18U boys and their coaching staff on a gritty team performance throughout the weekend that led to a GOLD medal.  The team is looking forward to the upcoming Grand Prix as they prepare for the OVA and VC championships.
