Weekend Round Up

2017 / 02 / 12

18u Girls were in Coburg this weekend and a battered group was up for the challenge. A win would place them back in Premiere and likely at the Grand Prix. Coach Sheila Roy took the helm for Coach Mousseau this weekend and the girls responded well. Battling through the pool play they won their quarter final vs Georgian Cubs but the #3 seed DRVC Rebels outlasted our gals in the 3rd set of the semi to advance and the Broncos had to settle for Bronze after a clear cut win over the host Breakers. Now it is a numbers game to sit and wait.

Meanwhile the 17u Eldorado were in Cassleman for their first crack at an 18u event. Going in to the draw as the number 9 seed they were our to prove themselves against the local teams from the east.

At 15u we had an astounding 7 teams at two locations. Playing in the Championship tier our Trailbalzers, Stampede and Ambush were about to do battle for a chance at moving to Premiere and battle they did. First up the Trailblazeers and Stampede met in pool play and the HP Stamps knocked off the higher seeded Blazers in straight sets. With a loss each to the titans they flipped positions heading into the playoff round. Meanwhile the Ambush were in fact laying in wait, seeded 8th they stormed to the top of their pool with wins over the Vikings and Durham Red. This put them square up against the Blazers, whom they doused in the quarters, then they avoided being trampled by the Stampede in the third set of the semis only to fall in an epic battle in the finals with the Titans of Scarborough fame (after winning the first losses of 30-32 and 12-15 were a crusing end to the day). Meanwhile the Stampede continued to run roughshod over teams with a 2-0 grounding of Pegasus in the Bronze. 2 of 3 podium placements is a good finish in this trailboss' view.

Meanwhile in Cornwall Both the 15u Scouts and Pioineers were joined by the two 14u Pre-HP Outlaws and Raiders for the Trillium event. The Scouts have been struggling to find their identity and compete level, coach Galarneault feels that once that spark is lit the girls can do more than they know. In the end a 5th place standing means they won their final battle of the day and that makes the trip home a little more pleasant.

Waiting to hear about the Pioneers, in with the Outlaws and Vikings they would have had a tough morningm but the nice thing about the 9th seed, you more than likely move up when all is said and done. Hope this isn't a jynx.  ;-)

To the 14u Raiders playing up was nothing new as they were seeded second for a reason, they can compete with the older girls on any given...Saturday??? Prove it they did, with wins over the Scouts and Vikings retained their #2 seed for the playoffs and then a victory over the PR Pumas would set up an all Maverick 14u Semi-final. More to come on that battle.

But at the end of the day it was the Outlaws who lived up to their name and stole the show. This 14u band was able to win their pool moving up a seed and then defeat the Vikings Red in the quarters to match up with their sister Raiders in the semi. A first set loss stirred up the coals and the fire blazed as they outmuscled the Raiders and went on to face the 15u Fusion girls in the final. Being the best team in the event from Ottawa was enoguh of a challenge for Coach Spack and he guided the Outlaws to gold and a spot in Championship with the Blazers, Stamps and Ambush next rodeo. That should be a party! The Raiders went on to play for Bronze where the trials and batles of the day were evident and they came up just a little short. Still a spirited and well played day of volleyball according to coach Andy.

Meanwhile coach Rose Bergeron looking for new games to join in on with her Gamblers went to Quebec for the VBQ event in  Joliette where they played in their top dividion finished a respectible 9th of 14 teams. A great eye opener for the girls who were back in the gym today despite the weather. One can't help but be proud of a team that comes to work hard every day.
